Czech Open 2026: Roven Vogel Wins as Indian Players Finish Strongly
GM Roven Vogel won the Czech Open 2026 in Pardubice on tiebreak with 7.5/9, while Indian players Aswath S and Shyam Sundar M finished in the top six.
Germany's GM Roven Vogel has won the Czech Open 2026, the main grandmaster tournament of the big chess festival in Pardubice. Vogel scored 7.5 points from 9 games and took first place on tiebreak ahead of Czech FM Jachym Smolik, who also scored 7.5.
The Czech Open is a 9-round Swiss and one of the best-known open tournaments in Europe, attracting players of all ages and many countries every summer.
Vogel's decisive win came in round 8, when he beat India's GM Shyam Sundar M in the King's Indian Defense. In the final round he drew quickly with IM Jan Vykouk to make sure of first place.
The surprise of the tournament was Jachym Smolik. Though he started well down the list of seeds, he finished with three wins in a row, including a round 8 win over the experienced GM Luca Moroni Jr. His finish gave him a share of first place, a great result for a FIDE Master playing in his home country.
Several Indian players finished near the top. IM Aswath S and GM Shyam Sundar M both scored 7 points and finished in the top six, alongside IM Jan Vykouk and GM Meylis Annaberdiyev.
Smolik's run shows why open tournaments are so exciting. In an open event any player can beat anyone, and seeds are only a guide. If you are a lower-rated player in a big open, do not see yourself as an underdog with nothing to win. Play good moves, stay confident, and you may surprise yourself and others.
For players at the top, Vogel's approach in the last round also shows good tournament judgement. A quick draw with Black kept his position safe. When a draw is enough to secure a strong result, there is nothing wrong with taking it.
Congratulations to Roven Vogel and Jachym Smolik on their excellent results.
