Praggnanandhaa Wins the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals
Praggnanandhaa R won the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals in St. Louis, beating Fabiano Caruana 15-13 in a final that went down to the last blitz games.
India's Praggnanandhaa R has won the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals. In a dramatic final in St. Louis he beat Fabiano Caruana by 15 points to 13, rounding off an outstanding month in which he also won the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz.
The final did not start well for Praggnanandhaa. In the first classical game Caruana won with White in the Italian Game, which gave him 6 points. The second classical game was drawn, so Caruana led 9 to 3 going into the rapid.
That is when Praggnanandhaa turned the match around. He won the first rapid game with White in the Queen's Gambit Declined. In the second rapid game Praggnanandhaa had the black pieces and answered Caruana with the Sicilian Defense, and he won again. Each rapid win was worth 4 points, and suddenly Praggnanandhaa led 11 to 9.
The four blitz games were tense to the very end. The first was drawn and Caruana won the second, so the score was level at 12 to 12. Praggnanandhaa then won the third game with White and drew the fourth to secure the title.
In the match for third place, Wesley So beat Vincent Keymer.
There is a lot to learn from this final. Praggnanandhaa lost the first game and was six points behind, but he did not panic or start taking wild risks. He kept playing good chess and took his chances when they came in the rapid. Being behind is not the same as being beaten. Many games and matches are won by the player who stays calm after a setback.
It has been a remarkable August in St. Louis for Praggnanandhaa: first at the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz, second at the Sinquefield Cup, and now champion of the Grand Chess Tour Finals. For young players in India and around the world, it is a reminder of what steady work and a strong mind can achieve.
