Magnus Carlsen Wins the Esports World Cup 2026 Chess Title
Magnus Carlsen won the Esports World Cup 2026 chess event, beating Denis Lazavik in the final, while Hikaru Nakamura finished third.
Magnus Carlsen has won the chess event at the Esports World Cup 2026. In the grand final he beat Belarusian grandmaster Denis Lazavik convincingly, winning both sets of their match.
Carlsen's route to the title began in the quarterfinals, where he beat India's Nihal Sarin. In the semifinals he faced Alireza Firouzja. After two drawn games Carlsen won the next three in a row and reached the final.
Denis Lazavik was the surprise of the playoffs. In the quarterfinals he and Nodirbek Abdusattorov drew four games in a row, and Lazavik won the deciding game. In the semifinals he knocked out Hikaru Nakamura, one of the best fast-chess players in history, by winning two games without losing any.
In the final Carlsen was simply too strong. In each of the two sets he won two games and drew two, without losing a single game.
Hikaru Nakamura took third place by beating Firouzja in the match for bronze. Earlier, in the quarterfinals, Nakamura had a very close match with Arjun Erigaisi: their first four games were all drawn before Nakamura won the decider. Arjun can be proud of holding one of the world's best speed players level for four games.
This event used 10-minute games with no increment, so clock skills mattered as much as chess skills. Without increment, a player who gets low on time cannot gain any back. A smart habit for fast games is to play your opening moves quickly and confidently, then save your thinking time for the complicated middlegame moments that really matter.
Lazavik's run is also a great story for young players. He beat Abdusattorov and Nakamura and reached the final of a major event. Ratings and reputations do not decide games. The moves on the board do.
Congratulations to Magnus Carlsen on the title.
