The Inspiring Rise of Aronyak Ghosh to India’s 95th Grandmaster

Checkmate Against the Odds

Aronyak Ghosh’s rise to becoming India’s 95th Grandmaster is a story shaped as much by quiet perseverance as by exceptional talent. Introduced to chess at a young age through his father, Mrinal Ghosh, a former player-turned-arbiter, Aronyak’s early fascination soon evolved into disciplined ambition. What began as a child’s curiosity steadily transformed into a pursuit demanding focus, resilience, and sacrifice.

Coming from a modest background, his journey was far from easy. Financial constraints meant that each tournament carried significance beyond competition; it determined the possibility of the next opportunity. His parents made difficult choices to support his growth, with his mother, Sanchita Ghosh, accompanying him to events and his father ensuring he never lost sight of the game.

Early setbacks, including a challenging debut at the Under-7 Nationals, became learning experiences. Under the guidance of dedicated mentors, Aronyak developed both the mental stamina and strategic depth required at the highest level. Long hours of training and an unwavering routine shaped his competitive edge.

His path to the Grandmaster title was gradual yet resolute. After earning his first norm in 2022 and his second in 2024, the final milestone remained elusive for years. It was in Bangkok, at the 23rd BCC Open 2026, that he finally secured his third norm with an unbeaten performance, completing his long-awaited ascent.

Aronyak’s journey stands as a powerful lesson: true success is not instant, but forged through patience, discipline, and belief.
