Sinquefield Cup 2026 Chess: Five Players Share the Early Lead

The Sinquefield Cup 2026 is under way in St. Louis, and the first two rounds have been full of fight. After two rounds five players share the lead on 1.5 points: Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian, Wesley So, Praggnanandhaa R and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

The Sinquefield Cup is a 10-player round-robin played at a classical time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 more minutes, with 30 seconds added after every move. Players have time to think deeply, so every decisive game is hard-earned.

Fabiano Caruana drew first blood in round 1. He beat Jorden Van Foreest with the white pieces in the Italian Game. The other four games in round 1 were drawn.

Round 2 was much more dramatic, with four wins. Praggnanandhaa beat Javokhir Sindarov in a marathon 95-move Queen's Gambit Declined, a real test of patience. Levon Aronian also needed 91 moves to defeat Vincent Keymer. Wesley So beat Van Foreest, and Vachier-Lagrave beat Samuel Sevian in 44 moves of the English Opening.

That makes a difficult start for Jorden Van Foreest, who has lost both of his games. Every tournament player knows this feeling. With seven rounds left, there is plenty of time to recover, and many champions have turned around a slow start.

Here is a lesson for students from round 2. Two of the wins took more than 90 moves. Grandmasters rarely win quickly against each other. They build a small advantage, keep it, and slowly make it bigger, often in the endgame. If you get a slightly better position in your own games, do not rush or panic. Look for a small improvement every move, and let your opponent be the one who runs out of ideas.

Round 3 is next, with Caruana against So among the key pairings.
