Fagernes International 2026: Gloeckler Still Leads After Round 7
Christian Gloeckler leads the Fagernes International Autumn 2026 with 6/7, ahead of Rinat Jumabayev, while India's Sasikiran is among the chasers.
IM Christian Gloeckler of Germany is still leading the Fagernes International Autumn 2026 in Norway. After seven rounds of the grandmaster section, he has 6 points from 7 games, half a point ahead of GM Rinat Jumabayev of Kazakhstan.
Gloeckler won again in round 7, beating IM Lukas Dotzer in 35 moves of the Sicilian Defense. For an International Master, leading a field full of grandmasters this late in the tournament is an outstanding achievement.
Jumabayev kept up the pressure with a 63-move win over Norwegian GM Elham Amar in the Catalan Opening. Amar won the Sparkassen Chess Trophy in Dortmund in August, so this was a valuable win.
India's GM Krishnan Sasikiran has recovered well from his round 3 loss. In round 7 he won with Black against GM Aksel Bu Kvaloy and is now among a group of players on 5 points, together with GM Vitaly Sivuk, IM Semen Mitusov and GM Tiger Hillarp Persson.
GM Harshavardhan G B is just behind this group. After losing to Hillarp Persson in round 4, he has recovered steadily and still has chances with three rounds to go. GM Dronavalli Harika has drawn several games in a row and remains in the middle of a large group.
Several young Indian players have also been impressive. IM Moksh Amit Doshi won in round 7, and FM Adharsh K beat FM Charvi A in an all-Indian game.
Gloeckler's run shows what is possible in an open tournament. Titles and ratings matter less than good preparation and confident play. He has beaten strong opponents and stayed calm while leading, which is often the hardest part.
For students, there is a lesson in Sasikiran's recovery. A loss in the early rounds does not end your tournament. Many players finish strongly after a bad day by staying patient and taking their chances when they come.
Three rounds remain in Fagernes.
