Javokhir Sindarov Wins Clutch Chess Champions Showdown 2026
Javokhir Sindarov won the Clutch Chess Champions Showdown 2026 in Saint Louis ahead of Praggnanandhaa, Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura.
GM Javokhir Sindarov has won the Clutch Chess Champions Showdown 2026 in Saint Louis, ahead of three of the world's best players.
The event brought together four players: Sindarov, GM Praggnanandhaa R, GM Fabiano Caruana and GM Hikaru Nakamura. They played a rapid tournament at 10 minutes per player plus 5 seconds per move over three days.
The special twist in Clutch Chess is that games are worth more as the event goes on. A win was worth 1 point on day one, 2 points on day two and 3 points on day three. That means a player who falls behind early can still come back, but it also means the final day is under huge pressure.
Sindarov saved his best for that final day. He won three games on the last day, against Praggnanandhaa, Caruana and Nakamura, and did not lose a single game on day three. That strong finish carried him to first place with 20.5 points.
Praggnanandhaa finished second with 19 points after an excellent second day, when he won four games. Caruana was third with 16.5 points, and Nakamura fourth with 12.
The format shows why finishing well matters so much. In most tournaments every game counts the same, but in Clutch Chess the last games can change everything. Players have to manage their energy so they still have their best chess left at the end.
For young players, this is a good lesson in staying positive. A slow start is not the end of a tournament. Keep fighting, and your best results may still be ahead.
Congratulations to Javokhir Sindarov on his win in Saint Louis.
