FISU World University Chess Championship 2026: Engel and Schneider Lead
Luis Engel and Pang Tao lead the men's event and Jana Schneider the women's at the FISU World University Chess Championship 2026 in Liaocheng, China.
The FISU World University Championship Mind Sports 2026 is under way in Liaocheng, China, and the chess events are heading into their final rounds. University students from around the world are competing for world titles.
The classical events are 9-round Swiss tournaments at 60 minutes per player plus 30 seconds per move. There are separate sections for men and women, and blitz events are part of the programme too.
After seven rounds of the men's event, the top seed, German GM Luis Engel, shares the lead with China's GM Pang Tao. Both have 5.5 points. Czech IM Stepan Hrbek, Mongolia's IM Khishigbat Ulziikhishig and Poland's Radoslaw Psyk follow on 5 points.
In the women's event, German WGM Jana Schneider is leading with 6 points from 7 games. Slovakia's WFM Lucia Sevcikova is second with 5.5, and Poland's FM Liwia Jarocka and Germany's FM Lara Schulze are on 5.
Two rounds remain in both sections, so the titles are still very much open.
University chess is an important part of the chess world. Many students continue to play at a high level while studying, and university events give them a chance to represent their institutions internationally. It shows that chess and education go well together, and that young people do not have to choose between their studies and their passion for chess.
For school students who love chess, this is encouraging. Your chess journey does not have to end when you finish school. Many universities have chess clubs and teams, and some students compete at world level while earning their degrees.
There is also a lesson in time management that applies to both chess and study. Balancing a tournament with schoolwork or exams takes planning. Students who learn to organise their time well usually find they can enjoy chess and still do well in their studies.
ChessDaily will report the final results when the championships finish.
