Wesley So Wins U.S. Chess Championship 2026 After Playoff

GM Wesley So is the 2026 U.S. Chess Champion. He won the title in Saint Louis after a playoff against GM Fabiano Caruana.

So had led the championship for much of the event, but Caruana caught him in the final rounds. After 11 rounds of classical chess, both players had 7 points, so the title was decided by a rapid playoff.

The first playoff game was a real battle. Caruana had White, and the game lasted 107 moves before ending in a draw. In the second game, So had White and won in 49 moves to take the title.

GM Jeffery Xiong and GM Grigoriy Oparin shared third place with 6.5 points.

The U.S. Championship is a 12-player round robin, so every player faces every other player once. That makes it one of the hardest national championships in the world, with several of the world's top players in the field.

A playoff is a different kind of challenge. After a long and tiring event, players have to switch to a faster time control and play their best chess when the pressure is highest. Staying calm after a long draw, as So did, is a skill that takes practice.

For young players, there is a lesson in how So handled the end of the event. Losing a lead can be frustrating, but he kept his focus and won when it mattered most.

Congratulations to Wesley So on winning the U.S. Championship, and to Fabiano Caruana on a strong finish.
