Tan Zhongyi Wins the Cairns Cup 2026 Despite Final-Round Loss

Tan Zhongyi is the winner of the Cairns Cup 2026. The Chinese grandmaster scored 6.5 points out of 9 to finish half a point ahead of American Alice Lee, who took second place with 6.

Tan made her title chances much stronger in round 8 with a win over Bibisara Assaubayeva in the King's Indian Defense. That left her a point clear going into the last round. In the final round, though, Stavroula Tsolakidou beat her with the London System, her first and only loss of the event. Because Alice Lee drew her last game with Carissa Yip, Tan still finished first.

Alice Lee's second place is a great result. She won four games, including wins with Black against Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy, and beat Vaishali Rameshbabu in round 8. Carissa Yip and Bibisara Assaubayeva shared third place on 5 points.

Stavroula Tsolakidou deserves a special mention. She won two games with the London System, against Alice Lee and against the champion herself. The London System is a simple, flexible opening that many beginners learn, and here it beat two of the best players in the field. You do not need the most complicated opening to win. Understanding your opening's plans matters more.

For India's players, Divya Deshmukh finished on 4.5 points with two wins, and Koneru Humpy finished on 3.5. Vaishali had a difficult event.

Tan's last round holds a lesson too. Even champions lose games, sometimes at the most stressful moment. What mattered was the points she had banked earlier. Tournaments are long, and every half point you earn in the early rounds can protect you later. So fight hard in every game, not just the "important" ones.

Congratulations to Tan Zhongyi on a well-deserved title.
