Yu Yangyi Beats Ding Liren to Win Shenzhen Nanshan Masters 2026
Yu Yangyi won the Shenzhen Nanshan Masters 2026 rapid knockout, beating former world champion Ding Liren in the final after tiebreak games.
GM Yu Yangyi has won the Shenzhen Nanshan Masters 2026 in China. In the final he beat former world champion Ding Liren after a very close match that went to tiebreak games.
This year the event was a rapid knockout with 15 minutes per player plus 10 seconds per move. Leading Chinese players including Ding Liren, Yu Yangyi, Wang Hao and Xu Xiangyu took part.
The final was extremely tense. All four of the main rapid games between Yu and Ding were drawn, so the match went to tiebreaks. Yu won the first tiebreak game, Ding struck back in the second, and Yu won the third to claim the title.
On the way to the final, Yu beat Huang Renjie in the quarterfinals and Wang Hao in the semifinals. Against Wang Hao, the first two games were drawn before Yu won the third and fourth. Ding beat Meng Yihan in the quarterfinals and Kong Xiangrui in the semifinals.
Yu Yangyi has a long history at the Shenzhen Masters, and this victory adds to his strong record at the event. Ding Liren, who also played for China at the Chess Olympiad last month, showed good form throughout the week.
The final is a great example for students of how fine the margins can be between top players. Four games without a winner show how evenly matched they were. In the end, the result came down to a few moments in fast tiebreak games.
There is a practical lesson here too. Many tournaments use faster tiebreak games when players are level. If you play in events with tiebreaks, practise faster time controls so that you feel comfortable when the clock is short. Staying calm in a tiebreak is a skill that can be trained, just like opening knowledge or endgame technique.
Congratulations to Yu Yangyi on his victory in Shenzhen.
